Some insurance policies have to be seen to be believed.
You may have heard of various celebrities taking out policies on their most valuable assets. While these multi-million dollar policies make headlines for protecting famous body parts, we thought we’d take a look at some unusual policies you may not have heard of.
It’s not just celebrities who have insurance policies for their body parts. Wine makers, coffee tasters and restaurant reviewers have all purchased coverage for their taste buds. One American ice cream taster has a policy worth million dollars – or roughly $100 per taste bud. Now that’s a cool policy!
Some insurance policies are downright spooky. In 2002, a London hotel took out coverage for staff and guests in case of death or disability caused by a poltergeist or other ghostly spirit. There have also been policies taken out against vampire bites and werewolf attacks. For those more concerned with non-Earthly risks, you can buy a policy offering $10 million in case of alien abduction. All you need is the signature of the abductor to prove your claim.
Before laughing too hard at any of these policies, you may want to call your insurance broker. Back in the early days of cinema, movie-goers were so unsure about what they might see on the big screen, they took out policies in case they actually died from laughter. Some comedy clubs have continued this tradition, buying coverage in case an audience member is injured or dies after laughing too hard.
There are more sensible policies for the Average Joe including coverage for life’s most exciting moments. If you’re getting hitched, some policies offer any financially-invested third party (ie. parents) reimbursement in case the bride or groom calls off the wedding. Those expecting a baby can take out a policy to provide coverage if they have two or more bundles of joy. One couple in Michigan collected once after having twins, took out another policy and then collected again when their second set of twins was born!
These wacky policies are a good reminder to get coverage for the things you care about – whatever they may be. Call your local BrokerLink broker to make sure your insurance is up to date and provides the protection you need.
