We have a helpful article about many of the typical Standard Endorsement Forms (SEF) that are either mandatory or available to purchase, to add to the typical auto insurance policy in Alberta.
In this article we’ll talk specifically about the S.E.F. 27 endorsement and how it can help you when travelling.
S.E.F. 27 Legal Liability for Damage to Non-owned Autos
The S.E.F. 27, when added to your automobile insurance policy, extends the physical damage coverage you currently carry on your personal vehicle, to a rental vehicle when you are away on vacation or business.
So, if you add this endorsement to your auto insurance policy and then travel to somewhere in Canada or the U.S.A., where your insurance would normally cover you if you were driving, you can use this feature to insure your rental vehicle! As mentioned, only good in Canada and the U.S.A. and only good for the limits of your own auto insurance policy, but for the average auto renter that should be plenty.
The S.E.F. 27 is fairly inexpensive and the cost is quickly offset by the savings you’ll get when avoiding the price of the daily insurance policies offered by the rental car companies. This feature is also available for those who have motorcycle insurance and may want to rent a bike when travelling, as some do in the winter months.
Many insurers offer this endorsement as an option on your auto insurance policy so it’s best to talk with your broker and see how to arrange this, especially if you’re planning to travel and rent a car at your destination.
