You never know when the next big storm may hit. Keeping this in mind, it’s important to ensure you have the right insurance coverage to protect your home, vehicle and possessions.
Your BrokerLink broker can discuss your home and auto insurance policies to make sure you’ve got adequate coverage for any wacky weather in your area.
Here are a few key points to keep in mind when reviewing your coverage with your broker:
- Damages to homes caused by hail or wind are usually covered, including damage caused by flying debris or falling branches or trees. If water enters your home due to openings caused by wind or hail, the resulting damage is typically covered as well.
- Vehicles are usually only covered for hail, wind, ice or water damage if comprehensive or all perils insurance has been purchased. This coverage isn’t mandatory, so check with your BrokerLink broker to see if you’ve purchased it.
- While most home insurance policies usually cover sudden and accidental occurrences of burst pipes and appliances, damages caused by freezing pipes may not be included. This could happen if you go on vacation and leave your home unattended during a period of cold weather.
- If a sewer backup occurs in your home, water damage is only covered if sewer backup coverage has been purchased.
Remember to also ensure you’ve completed an up-to-date home inventory checklist. This will help tremendously if you ever need to file a claim for your possessions following damage to your home.
While sudden storms can make unwelcome visits, you can make sure you’re prepared to deal with these unwelcome visitors proactively.
